This group gathers numerical algorithms designed to detect an error in transmitted or stored data, including checksum schemes such as Cksum, the BSD checksum, the SYSV checksum, Adler-32 and Fletcher's checksum, the standardized ISO/IEC 7064 check character system, check-digit algorithms such as the Luhn algorithm, the Luhn mod N algorithm and the Damm algorithm, and simple file verification methods. Their shared work is computing a short value from a larger input so that an accidental change to the input can be detected, as distinct from a cryptographic hash designed to resist deliberate tampering or a number-theoretic computation for its own sake, which belongs to Number Theory and Primality.
