Abraham Lempel

Theory of Computation

Abraham Lempel was an Israeli computer scientist, born on 10 February 1936 and died on 4 February 2023, and one of the fathers of the LZ family of lossless data compression algorithms. Together with Jacob Ziv he published the LZ78 algorithm in 1978. That work was later improved by Terry Welch into the Lempel-Ziv-Welch algorithm, known as LZW, a universal lossless compression algorithm that Welch published in 1984 and that is credited jointly to all three men.
