Donald Marquardt

Theory of Computation

Donald W. Marquardt was an American statistician, born in New York City in 1929 and died in 1997, who rediscovered the Levenberg-Marquardt nonlinear least squares fitting algorithm. He studied physics and mathematics at Columbia University and mathematics and statistics at the University of Delaware, and he joined DuPont in 1953, where he worked for 39 years. In 1963 he published his well-known paper on an algorithm for least-squares estimation of nonlinear problems, and in 1975 he was elected a Fellow of the American Statistical Association.
