John R. Dormand

Theory of Computation

John R. Dormand is the co-originator, with P. J. Prince, of the Dormand-Prince method, an embedded Runge-Kutta method for solving ordinary differential equations that uses six function evaluations to calculate fourth-order and fifth-order accurate solutions. Dormand and Prince chose the coefficients of their method to minimize the error of the fifth-order solution, which is the main difference from the Fehlberg method. The method is the default in the ode45 solver of MATLAB and GNU Octave. Dormand is also the author of the 1996 book Numerical Methods for Differential Equations: A Computational Approach, published by CRC Press.
