Theory of Computation

Simon Plouffe is a Canadian mathematician whose place in computing rests on digit extraction and integer sequences. In 1995 he discovered the Bailey-Borwein-Plouffe formula, or BBP algorithm, which permits the computation of the nth binary digit of pi, and a 2022 formula of his extracts the nth digit of pi in decimal. In 1995 he also co-authored The Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences, which became the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences, a website dedicated to integer sequences. In 1975 he set a record for memorizing digits of pi by reciting 4096 of them, a record that stood until 1977. He was born in Saint-Jovite, Quebec, in 1956.
