Nial (Nested Interactive Array Language) is an array programming language developed by Michael Jenkins at Queen's University in Canada beginning in the late 1970s, distinguished from other array languages such as APL by its support for arbitrarily nested arrays rather than only flat, rectangular arrays, and by its use of an English-like keyword syntax rather than APL's special symbol set. Nial combines array-processing operators with functional-programming features and was designed with an explicit goal of being more readable to newcomers than symbol-heavy array languages.
