The family of array programming languages that grew out of APL, developed in the 1960s by Kenneth E. Iverson. APL takes the multidimensional array as its central datatype, and later languages such as J and the Dyalog dialect keep that idea while changing the character set or the implementation. J, developed in the early 1990s by Iverson and Roger Hui, is based primarily on APL and uses only the basic ASCII character set instead of the special symbols of APL.
