Olivetti Elea

Commercial Computer

The Elea was a series of mainframe computers that Olivetti began developing in the late 1950s, built entirely with transistors for high performance and conceived, designed and developed by a small group of researchers led by Mario Tchou, with industrial design by Ettore Sottsass. The ELEA 9003 was the first solid-state computer designed and manufactured in Italy, and about forty units of the Elea line were placed with customers before Olivetti sold its mainframe business to General Electric in August 1964.

FAQs

What does the name Elea mean?

It was an acronym that also honors the ancient Greek colony of Elea.

The name began as an acronym for Elaboratore Elettronico Aritmetico, meaning arithmetical electronic computer, which was later changed to Automatico for marketing reasons. It was also chosen as a tribute to the polis of Elea, a colony of Magna Graecia and home of the Eleatic school of philosophy.
