All IAS Machine-Derived Computers

IAS Machine-Derived Computers are the family of early digital computers built to the design pioneered by the IAS machine, the stored-program computer completed at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton under John von Neumann's direction. Research teams in the United States, Australia, India, Sweden, Denmark and the Soviet Union copied or closely adapted the IAS machine's architecture rather than designing a computer from scratch, producing a wave of related machines through the early 1950s that shared its register structure, its bit-parallel arithmetic and its Williams-tube memory. ILLIAC I at the University of Illinois, ORDVAC at the Ballistics Research Laboratory, JOHNNIAC at RAND, MANIAC I at Los Alamos, SILLIAC in Sydney, MISTIC at Michigan State, SEAC in Washington, TIFRAC in Bombay, BESK in Stockholm and DASK in Copenhagen all trace their logical design back to this single source, making the IAS machine one of the most widely replicated computer designs of the vacuum-tube era.
