CIFA-1, the first Romanian computer, was built in 1957 under the guidance of Victor Toma at the Institute of Atomic Physics, part of Romania's contribution to the broader Eastern Bloc's advancement of computer technology alongside similar efforts in the Soviet Union, East Germany, Poland and Czechoslovakia. The experimental, first-generation, vacuum-tube CIFA-1 was later reproduced in small numbers in two transistor-based versions, the CIFA-10X and the CET 500.
