Fields in which computation is tightly coupled to physical processes through sensors and actuators. It covers systems that monitor and control physical machinery, infrastructure and environments with feedback loops, and robots that sense, plan and act in the world. A field belongs here when correct behavior depends on the timing and safety of interaction with the physical environment. It excludes the general embedded platforms and processor design of the architecture group, and the study of how people work with robots, which belongs to Human-Centered Computing.
