Fields concerned with the World Wide Web as an information system and with giving web data machine-readable meaning. It covers the study of the web as a large sociotechnical system and the use of shared vocabularies and linked data so that programs can interpret and combine information across sites. A field belongs here when the web is the object of study or the carrier of structured meaning. It excludes network protocols, which belong to Networks, and general search, which belongs to information retrieval.
