Operating Systems and Systems Software

Fields concerned with the software that manages a computer's hardware and provides services to programs. It covers the scheduling of processes, the management of memory and storage, the handling of devices and the interfaces that applications build upon. A field belongs here when it studies the layer between hardware and applications. It excludes the design of the hardware itself, which belongs to Computer Systems Organization, and application-level software engineering practice.
