IBM System/390 was a mainframe computer family that IBM announced on September 5, 1990, implementing ESA/390, the fifth generation of the System/360 instruction set architecture and successor to System/370; its first machines were the Enterprise System/9000 family. Systems ranged from 2 gigabytes of main storage in the original ES/9000 models up to 32 gigabytes in later 9672 models, ran operating systems including MVS/ESA, OS/390, VSE/ESA and VM/ESA, and introduced ESCON fibre optic channels and Sysplex clustering for coordinating multiple machines. IBM discontinued System/390 on December 31, 2004, having succeeded it in 2000 with the 64 bit z/Architecture, and the architecture was also licensed or copied by competitors including Amdahl, Hitachi and Fujitsu.
