R is a programming language for statistical computing and data visualization, widely used in data mining, bioinformatics, data analysis and data science. It was designed by Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman and first posted in August 1993, becoming a GNU project in December 1997 before its 1.0 release in February 2000. R is multi-paradigm, supporting procedural, object-oriented, functional, reflective, imperative and array programming, and is dynamically typed. Its name comes both from its role as a successor to the S language and from the shared first letter of its two original authors first names, Ross and Robert. R extends through a large ecosystem of packages that add statistical techniques, data modeling, graphics production and reporting.
