BSD Checksum

Numerical Algorithm

The BSD checksum is a legacy checksum algorithm implemented in early BSD Unix systems and still available through the sum command-line utility. It computes a 16-bit checksum by processing the input one byte at a time, applying a circular right rotation of one bit to the running accumulator before adding each new byte, a step meant to reduce the weaknesses of simple addition-based checksums. The algorithm offers no security guarantees and detects errors less reliably than CRC-32, so it survives mainly as a legacy option in older Unix tooling rather than for serious integrity checking.
