The Verhoeff algorithm is a checksum formula for error detection, first published by the Dutch mathematician Jacobus Verhoeff in 1969. It was the first decimal check digit algorithm able to detect all single-digit errors as well as all transposition errors involving two adjacent digits, a combination that had previously been thought impossible for a code of that kind.
