Date of Easter

The date of Easter each year is determined through a calculation known as computus, or paschalion in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, so computing the date in advance requires correlating the lunar month with the solar year while also accounting for the month, date and weekday of the Julian or Gregorian calendar. The calculation is complicated further by the aim of tying the date of Easter to the Jewish feast of Passover, which Christian tradition holds as the time of the crucifixion.
