Squeak is an open-source, object-oriented programming language and development environment descended directly from Smalltalk-80, first released in 1996 by a team including Smalltalk's original co-creator Alan Kay and Dan Ingalls, distributed as a portable, self-contained image that bundles its own virtual machine, class libraries and live development tools. Squeak has been used extensively in education, most notably as the original implementation platform for the Etoys and Scratch educational programming environments, and its Morphic graphical framework directly influenced later live-programming and direct-manipulation interface designs.
