A/UX is a Unix based operating system built by Apple Computer for Macintosh computers, combining Unix with the graphical interface and application compatibility of the classic Mac OS System 7. It was the first official Unix based operating system from Apple, launched in 1988 and discontinued in 1995 with version 3.1.1, and required select 68k based Macintosh models fitted with a floating point unit and a paged memory management unit. Built on UNIX System V Release 2.2 with features drawn from later System V releases and from BSD, and compliant with POSIX and the System V Interface Definition, A/UX let Apple bid for large computer supply contracts with the United States federal government.
