ProDOS is the name of two related operating systems for the Apple II line of personal computers. The original ProDOS, renamed ProDOS 8 in version 1.2, was the last official operating system usable across all 8 bit Apple II computers and was distributed from 1983 to 1993, becoming the most popular Apple II operating system within ten months of its January 1983 release, while the separate ProDOS 16 served as a stop gap solution for the 16 bit Apple IIgs until it was replaced by GS/OS within two years. Apple marketed the ProDOS name as standing for Professional Disk Operating System.
