Cosmos (operating system)

Operating System

Cosmos is a toolkit for building graphical and command line operating systems, started by Chad Hower together with Matthijs ter Woord and since expanded by a community of contributors. It is written mostly in C# alongside a small high level assembly language called X#, uses a monolithic kernel aimed at x86 processors, and compiles through IL2CPU, a tool that turns Common Intermediate Language code into native machine code ahead of time. The project is open source under a BSD license, integrates closely with Microsoft Visual Studio, and can be deployed through virtualization, USB or CD-ROM booting, or PXE network booting. Rather than aiming to be a finished production operating system, it functions as an abstraction layer meant to make building a new operating system easier.
