Operating System

CP/M, standing originally for Control Program/Monitor and later Control Program for Microcomputers, is a mass-market operating system created in 1974 by Gary Kildall of Digital Research for Intel 8080-based microcomputers. As a disk operating system its purpose was to organize files on magnetic storage and load and run programs from disk; initially confined to single-tasking 8-bit machines with no more than 64 kilobytes of memory, later versions added multi-user variations and moved to 16-bit processors.
