Firefox OS was an open source operating system for smartphones, tablet computers, smart televisions and streaming dongles, designed by Mozilla and outside contributors and first sold commercially in 2014. It was a Linux based system built on Gecko, the rendering engine of the Firefox web browser, and it aimed to provide a complete alternative operating system for running web applications built with open standards such as HTML5 and JavaScript rather than proprietary app frameworks. Mozilla announced in December 2015 that it would stop developing smartphone versions, ended all development work in September 2016, and the platform was fully discontinued by January 2017.
