FreeDOS

FreeDOS is a free and open source operating system for IBM PC compatible computers that provides an environment compatible with MS-DOS, letting users run legacy DOS software and supporting embedded systems. Jim Hall started the project in 1994 after Microsoft ended its own support for MS-DOS, the first stable release followed in 2006, and the most recent version, 1.4, was released in April 2025. FreeDOS supports COM executables, standard DOS executables and Borland's 16 bit DPMI executables, and it can run 32 bit DPMI programs with the help of DOS extenders. The core system is distributed under the GNU General Public License, though some of its bundled utilities, such as 4DOS, carry their own separate licenses.
