Tru64 UNIX is a discontinued 64 bit UNIX operating system for the Alpha instruction set architecture, currently owned by Hewlett-Packard after previously belonging to Compaq and, before that, to Digital Equipment Corporation, where it was known as Digital UNIX, originally DEC OSF/1 AXP. It is based on the OSF/1 operating system, while the earlier UNIX product from Digital Equipment Corporation, Ultrix, had instead been based on BSD. Unusually among commercial UNIX implementations it is built on the Mach kernel developed at Carnegie Mellon University, alongside other Mach based systems such as GNU Hurd, NeXTSTEP, MkLinux, and Darwin, and it requires the SRM boot firmware found on Alpha based computers.
