Newton OS

Newton OS was an operating system Apple Computer built for its Newton line of personal digital assistants, released on August 3, 1993 and developed through a final version, 2.1, in March 1997. Written entirely in C++, it was engineered to be lightweight, favoring low power consumption and efficient memory use, and its applications came preinstalled in ROM to speed startup and leave more storage for the user's own data. Its best known feature was handwriting recognition, built on CalliGrapher technology, which drew criticism in its early form but improved substantially with Newton OS 2.0 and could recognize hand-printed text, cursive writing or a mix of both alongside stylus input and an on-screen keyboard. Newton devices ran on ARM processors, and the system offered a graphical interface with screen rotation, tabbed document organization and infrared document transfer, supporting both compiled C++ applications and NewtonScript, an interpreted language built for the platform.
