Computer Architecture

This group gathers pioneers of computer systems organization whose primary contribution was the overall design of a computer's structure, the arrangement of processor, memory and input and output that a machine's software sees and depends on, including chief architects of named mainframe and minicomputer systems, cache and memory hierarchy design, dataflow and stack machine architectures, Flynn's taxonomy of parallel architectures, and recipients of the ACM-IEEE Eckert-Mauchly Award for career contributions to computer architecture. It follows the Architectures second level heading of the ACM Computing Classification System under Computer systems organization. Their shared work is the structural design of a computing system as a whole, as distinct from its physical semiconductor implementation or the specific processor microarchitecture within it.

While building the computer Z1 in 1936, Konrad Zuse described in two patent applications for his future projects that machine instructions could be stored in the same storage used for data, i.e., the stored-program concept.
