Carol Shaw, born in 1955, is an American video game designer and programmer, widely believed to be the first female professional video game designer. She studied electrical engineering and computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, and joined Atari in 1978, where she designed 3-D Tic-Tac-Toe and Video Checkers for the Atari VCS, later renamed the Atari 2600. She also co-wrote the Atari BASIC Reference Manual with Keith Brewster and developed a programmable Calculator application for the Atari 8-bit computers. After a spell at Tandem Computers she moved to Activision in 1982 and created the vertically scrolling shooter River Raid, a major hit for the 2600. She left game development in 1984 and retired in 1990.
