Frank Yates (1902 to 1994) was an English statistician, born in Manchester and educated at Cambridge, who became head of statistics at the Rothamsted Experimental Station in 1933 and stayed until his retirement in 1968. He is known for work on the design and analysis of experiments, including factorial designs, incomplete block designs and sampling methods, often in partnership with R. A. Fisher. He was also an early and enthusiastic user of computers for statistical work: in 1954 he bought a computer to analyse data at Rothamsted, helped to establish the British Computer Society and served as its president in 1960 and 1961, urging statisticians to write and share code for standard calculations.
