Luiz Velho (born June 5, 1956, in Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian computer scientist and full researcher and professor at the Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada, known as IMPA, where he directs the VISGRAF laboratory researching modeling, rendering, imaging and animation. Trained in industrial design at ESDI-UERJ before specializing in computer science at PUC-Rio, he earned a master's degree in computer graphics from the MIT Media Lab and a PhD in computer science from the University of Toronto under Demetri Terzopoulos. He is known for developing the 4-8 subdivision scheme, a method for refining geometric meshes used in computer graphics, delivered a keynote at the 2005 Eurographics Symposium on Geometry Processing in Vienna, and received Brazil's National Order of Scientific Merit in 2010.
