Anastasios Venetsanopoulos was a Greek born Canadian electrical and computer engineering professor, born June 19, 1941, who spent most of his career at the University of Toronto, serving as dean of its Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering from 2001 to 2006, before becoming founding vice president of research and innovation at what is now Toronto Metropolitan University in 2006. He earned a bachelor's degree from the National Technical University of Athens and a master's degree, master of philosophy, and doctorate from Yale University, and his research produced pioneering work in multidimensional and nonlinear filter theory, multimedia systems, and biometrics, including face and gait recognition and wireless local area network positioning. He was elected a Fellow of the IEEE, received the IEEE Millennium Medal, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and received an honorary doctorate from the National Technical University of Athens. He died on November 17, 2014.
