Cordelia Schmid

Cordelia Schmid (born September 28, 1967, in Mainz, Germany) is a German computer vision researcher known for work on large-scale image retrieval, classification and object detection. She earned a degree in computer science from the University of Karlsruhe and a doctorate from the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble in 1996 under Roger Mohr, with a thesis on local greyvalue invariants for image matching and retrieval. She leads the Thoth project team at Inria, the French national research institute for computer science, in Montbonnot, France. She was elected an IEEE Fellow in 2012 for contributions to large-scale image retrieval, classification and object detection, won the Longuet-Higgins Prize in 2006, 2014 and 2016, was elected to the Leopoldina German National Academy of Sciences in 2017, and received the Milner Award in 2020, the Korber European Science Prize in 2023 and a European Inventor Award in 2024.
