Feng-hsiung Hsu (born January 1, 1959, in Keelung, Taiwan) is a Taiwanese-American computer scientist and electrical engineer who was the architect and principal designer of IBM's Deep Blue, the chess-playing computer that defeated world champion Garry Kasparov in 1997, the first time a computer had beaten a reigning grandmaster in tournament play. He earned his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University, where he developed the predecessor systems ChipTest and Deep Thought, and joined IBM in 1989 before moving to Microsoft Research Asia in 2003. He received the ACM Grace Murray Hopper Award in 1991 and wrote Behind Deep Blue: Building the Computer that Defeated the World Chess Champion, published in 2002.
