Lin-Shan Lee

Lin-Shan Lee (born September 23, 1952) is a Taiwanese computer scientist and electrical engineer known for pioneering Chinese spoken language processing. He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University in 1974 and a PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1977, then joined the National Taiwan University faculty in 1982, where he founded and has directed the university's Speech Processing Laboratory since 1981 and served as head of its Computer Science Department from 1982 to 1987 and dean of its College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from 2009 to 2012. He developed and published what is described as the earliest complete set of fundamental technologies for Chinese spoken language processing, including speech synthesis between 1986 and 1989, a natural sentence grammar and parser between 1986 and 1991, and large vocabulary speech recognition between 1987 and 1997. He was elected an IEEE Fellow in 1993 for contributions to computer voice input and output techniques for Mandarin Chinese and to engineering education, an International Speech Communication Association Fellow in 2010, and a member of Academia Sinica in 2016, and received Taiwan's National Chair Professorship in 2004 and its Presidential Science Prize in 2015.
