Ralph Grishman

Ralph Grishman is an American computer scientist and professor at New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences who helped establish information extraction as a subfield of natural language processing. He co-designed the Message Understanding Conference, or MUC, evaluations that shaped the information extraction field, and developed the Proteus natural language processing system, which won first place in the Scenario Template task at the sixth Message Understanding Conference among more than 20 international participants. He has published widely on information extraction, machine learning for language, machine translation, syntactic parsing and treebanks, and authored a textbook on computational linguistics, and he served as vice president of the Association for Computational Linguistics in 1990 and as its president in 1991. He was named an ACL Fellow in 2017 and received the ACL Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024.
