This group gathers pioneers of software and its engineering whose primary contribution was designing or co-designing a programming language, from early efforts such as FORTRAN, ALGOL, COBOL and BASIC through later general-purpose, functional, object-oriented and scripting languages including C, C++, Smalltalk, Python, Java, JavaScript, Ruby, Rust, Go, Haskell and Scala. It follows the Programming Languages second-level heading of the ACM Computing Classification System under Software and its engineering. Their shared work is the language itself, its syntax, semantics and the paradigm it embodies, as distinct from the compilers and interpreters that implement a language or the tools built to write software in it.
