Carlos José Pereira de Lucena (born September 30, 1943) is a Brazilian computer scientist and one of the pioneers of computer science research in Brazil, having worked on the first computer built in Latin America and co-founded the Brazilian Computer Society. After a master's degree from the University of Waterloo in 1969, a PhD from UCLA in 1974 and a postdoctoral year at IBM Research in 1975, he founded and directs the Software Engineering Laboratory at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, where his research spans software engineering and multiagent systems. He has authored or coauthored more than 700 papers cited over 9,500 times, advised more than 45 doctoral theses and 120 master's dissertations, and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1978, Brazil's National Order of Scientific Merit in 1996, and status as an ACM Distinguished Member in 2009 and ACM Fellow in 2014.
