Alexander Stepanov is a Russian-American computer scientist best known as the primary designer and implementer of the C++ Standard Template Library, begun around 1992 while he was at Hewlett-Packard Labs, and as a leading advocate of generic programming, the practice of writing algorithms and data structures that work across many types rather than being rewritten for each one. He later helped formalize the idea of a concept in generic programming and co-authored the books Elements of Programming and From Mathematics to Generic Programming.
