Geoffrey W. Hill (1928 to 1982) was an Australian mathematician who joined Trevor Pearcey and Maston Beard at the CSIR Radiophysics Laboratory in Sydney in 1949 as a part time technical assistant, becoming the first programmer to work with the CSIR Mark 1 computer, later renamed CSIRAC. An amateur musician with perfect pitch, Hill programmed the machine's speaker to play recognizable melodies, giving the first public demonstration of computer generated music in 1951. He went on to develop Interprogram, a user friendly programming system for CSIRAC, and earned a PhD in 1961.
