Alexey Ivakhnenko was a Soviet Ukrainian mathematician and computer scientist best known for developing the group method of data handling, a method of inductive statistical learning that automatically builds and selects models from data rather than requiring a researcher to specify a models form in advance. The method is now widely considered one of the earliest working forms of what came to be called deep learning, since it built networks of increasingly complex models layer by layer directly from data.
