Teuvo Kohonen

Teuvo Kalevi Kohonen (1934-2021) was a Finnish computer scientist and professor emeritus of the Academy of Finland, best known for inventing the self-organizing map and for his work on learning vector quantization in machine learning and artificial neural networks. He spent his career at the Helsinki University of Technology and received numerous honors, including the IEEE Neural Networks Council Pioneer Award, the International Neural Network Society Lifetime Achievement Award, the IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Achievement Award and the IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Award, and was an IEEE Fellow.
