Carles Sierra is a Spanish computer scientist who is a research professor and director of the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), near Barcelona. He earned his PhD in computer science from the Technical University of Catalonia in 1989 and has contributed to artificial intelligence research since 1985 in knowledge representation, auctions, electronic institutions, autonomous agents, multiagent systems, and agreement technologies. He served as president of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence from 2020 to 2024 and received the ACM/SIGAI Autonomous Agents Research Award in 2019.
