Bernard Richards

Computing Methodologies

Bernard Richards, who lived from October 16, 1931 to April 7, 2024, was a British computer scientist and Emeritus Professor of Medical Informatics at the University of Manchester. He studied mathematics and physics, then worked under Alan Turing at Manchester for his master's degree, helping validate Turing's theory of morphogenesis, before earning a doctorate on the diffraction of light through a convex lens with Emil Wolf. He later moved into medicine, producing a paper on hormone peaks in the menstrual cycle, and worked on expert systems for use in open heart surgery and intensive care units, serving as Chairman of the BCS Health Informatics Committee and first President of the Institute for Health Record and Information Management.
