Karen Ida Boalth Sparck Jones was a self-taught programmer and pioneering British computer and information scientist responsible for the concept of inverse document frequency, a technique underlying most modern search engines. Combining statistics and linguistics in information retrieval and natural language processing, she was also an advocate for women in computer science. The Karen Sparck Jones Award has recognized outstanding research in her fields annually since 2008.
