Giuseppe Attardi

Giuseppe Attardi (born June 9, 1950, in Padova) is an Italian computer scientist and full professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Pisa, where he teaches advanced programming and natural language processing. As a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory from 1978 to 1981, he developed Omega, a description logic for representing knowledge through ontologies that became one of the early foundations of what would later be called the Semantic Web. He went on to research artificial intelligence, deep learning and text analytics at Sony's Paris research laboratory, the International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley and Yahoo Research Barcelona, helped build Arianna, the first Italian search engine, and developed the memory manager used in the Java programming language.
