Mark Steedman

Mark Steedman (born September 18, 1946) is a British computer scientist and cognitive scientist known for developing combinatory categorial grammar, a widely used formalism in computational linguistics. He earned a BSc in experimental psychology from the University of Sussex in 1968 and a PhD in artificial intelligence from the University of Edinburgh in 1973, supervised by H. C. Longuet-Higgins, with a dissertation on the formal description of musical perception. He lectured in psychology at the University of Warwick from 1977 to 1983, then lectured and later became a reader in computational linguistics at the University of Edinburgh from 1983 to 1988, before serving as associate and full professor in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania from 1988 to 1998. He returned to the University of Edinburgh in 1998 to hold the Chair of Cognitive Science in its School of Informatics, a position he continues to hold, with visiting appointments at the University of Texas at Austin, the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Radboud University Nijmegen and the University of Pennsylvania. He was elected a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence in 1993, of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the British Academy in 2002, and of the Association for Computational Linguistics in 2012, served as president of the Association for Computational Linguistics beginning in 2008, and was elected to the Academia Europaea in 2006.
