Elizabeth Feinler

Elizabeth Jocelyn Feinler, known as Jake Feinler, is an American information scientist who directed the Network Information Center at the Stanford Research Institute from 1972 to 1989, the group responsible for the ARPANET and early internets naming and directory infrastructure. Her group developed and managed the registries for the top level domains .mil, .gov, .edu, .org and .com, choosing the generic category names still used today, and in 1982 built the Whois protocol for looking up who was responsible for a given network resource. She was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame in 2012 for this foundational work.
