Networks

Nick McKeown (born April 7, 1963) is Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Stanford University, which he joined as an assistant professor in 1995, and a visiting professor at Oxford University, regarded as an influential figure in Internet architecture, high-performance switching and software-defined networking. He co-invented software-defined networking through the Ethane project and the OpenFlow protocol, helping shift computer networking toward software-controlled infrastructure, and in 1997 co-founded Abrizio Inc with Anders Swahn as its chief technology officer, a company acquired by PMC-Sierra in 1999 for stock worth about 400 million dollars. He shared the NEC C&C Award in 2015 with Martin Casado and Scott Shenker for their work on software-defined networking and received the Marconi Prize in 2025 for the same contributions.
