Bernard Cosell, known as Bernie Cosell, was one of three programmers at Bolt Beranek and Newman who wrote the software for the Interface Message Processor, the specialized computer that routed the ARPANET's first packets when its first two nodes came online in 1969. He focused on development tools and debugging code, and over a 26 year career at BBN earned a reputation as an outstanding debugger. He later retired to a sheep farm in Virginia, where he continued programming and teaching computer security.
